Today we visited the covered market and the Oxford Castle. The origins of the castle location date back 1000 years. It was mainly built for defensive purposes then later became a prison. It was a prison until it's closing in 1996.
Our tour guide was very colorful and was a form prisoner. Well, former prisoner in spirit only.
Note the worn circles in the solid oak floor beams. These were worn by prisoners feet in Victorian times operating a water pump to fill water tanks higher up in the tower.
Up to 60 prisoners were kept in this room with not facilities. When a prisoner died, they were not removed. Obviously not in recent history.
